5 Tips To Thrifting: The Before, During, & After

Posted on

Thrift-Shops2THRIFTING! Everyone’s doing it, right? Everyone’s making it appear to be super easy. Although it’s a “thing” now, diving right into it without a few mental tools to keep handy once you get started can lead to disaster. Here are some helpful tips on how to successfully get into the thrifting scene and come out with great garments.

Tip #1: Find The Hot Spots

So take a minute to think about where in your city do the “cool kids” live or hang out? Once you’ve gotten the area in mind thats when you start researching the local 2nd hand shops and thrift shops. The reason why I recommend the “cool kids” part of town is because you want to find discounted pieces that are in style and reflect what you have envisioned being added to your closet.

Tip #2: Create A Bomb.com Playlist

When you walk into some thrift shops there are rows upon rows of clothing and shoes packed tightly together. Its obvious that if you came to really do some digging you wont be able to do in a short period of time. You’re going to be in the thrift shop for a nice little minute so create a playlist. You need to load it full of upbeat jams that will help you dance down the aisles and watch the time fly by. My favorite tunes for a thrifting trip are by Lion Babe on SoundCloud (click here to check them out).

Tip #3: Bring The Mean Green

No, literally thrifting is all about SAVING that mean mean green. Bring cash with you and leave the debit/credit cards at home. When you are strapped with only cash you will be forced to be more strategic with your purchases. Having even one card in your pocketbook will temp you to go much more over your budget that need be and you may end up buying pieces you weren’t really digging all that much. Remember the whole point is to save, save, save.

Tip #4: Ditch The Kids

Now don’t get me wrong Lita loves the kids but thrifting requires focus. You really won’t have the time to keep watch on your cute little kiddies that will need constant wrangling in every 10 minutes. Work something out with your spouse or a trusted family member to babysit. You want to have an ample amount of time to peruse the aisles and try your potential gems on.

Tip #5: Inspect & Disinfect

Now this is tied into tip #4 because you need time to do this step as well. You want to examine each and every one of your news finds. Check for rips, holes, tears, broken zippers, loose threads, missing buttons, and/or stains. (Side note: you may be able to negotiate the price on the item because it has some damages that you will have to fix at home.) Once you are home head straight to the washer and dump everything in there. It may look clean but just wash it because you never know.
